Choosing Countertops: What’s the Difference?

Categories: Buying a new home, Interior Design | Posted: April 26, 2013 | No Comments »

Marble, Granite, Formica – oh my!

Your home’s countertops are some of the hardest working – and hardest hit – surfaces in your home.  Choosing the right countertop to compliment your lifestyle is imperative in sustaining your new home‘s elegance.

Granite
Granite is a natural stone that can stand up to heavy use such as heat, slicing and dicing.  It should, however, be sealed regularly as it is susceptible to chips and cracks.

Limestone
Like Granite, Limestone stands up well to heat.  It, however can easily be scratched and nicked and can absorb stains into its pores over time.

Marble
Though somewhat heat resistant and aesthetically pleasing, Marble is liable to fractures and scratches, and can deteriorate when exposed to acidic substances.  This stone would best be suited in a guest bathroom.

Quartz
Manufactured composite  made up of quartz and a hardy drying epoxy, Quautz countertops are strong and durable.  A perfect choice for kitchens that get a lot of use.

Concrete
Gaining in popularity, Concrete countertops tout an industrial look with unique appeal.  As with Granite, Concrete countertops must be sealed periodically to prevent cracking.

Laminate
This budget-friendly option comes in many patterns and colors that can mimic high-end stones.  This is a perfect choice for new home owners.
